CARPENTIER & BIRD WIN THE SCREWBALL REGATTA - AND THE CANADIAN FIREBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Annual Screwball regatta was combined with the Canadian Championships this year and held last weekend. Despite a forecast of little to no wind, Madeleine and her crew managed to get in three races each day.

The winners were PCYC's own Pierre Carpentier and Tom Bird, who were previous recipients of the scholarship program. Coming in second were Joe Jospe and Tom Egli who had a great series and who won the last race despite starting last. Rob Levy and Eric Owsten came in third. Bill Strath and Dave Munro came fourth in what is just their first year in the club. Thibault de Servigy and JT Kelly took the classic boat award, sailing Catspaw. We had seven scholarship recipients in the fleet which is a tribute to that program. Liz Brennan and her crew Iker came in from Calgary (their boat shipped in from Halifax for what has to be probably the longest combined travel distance). Mike McEvoy and his crew Frank drove in from Ottawa.

We had good sailing, ten boats and a lot of fun. Peter Kelly presided over the traditional Crew’s Union prize-giving and the fruits of his labour can be seen in the photo above

The Fireball fleet has three good quality scholarship boats available to students. We also encourage adult sailors to borrow one and take it out, especially on race days. With the North American and World Championships being held in PCYC next August, there has never been a better time to get into Fireball sailing at PCYC.
